Toyota Belgium builds a more inclusive website through accessibility audits

Toyota Belgium, part of Inchcape Belux, is committed to inclusivity and wanted to extend that commitment to their commercial offerings. With the European Accessibility Act (EAA) approaching, they needed a clear strategy to ensure their website was fully compliant. Humix, our community's accessibility experts, helped them with a comprehensive audit and a practical roadmap.

The challenge: from ambition to action

Toyota Belgium faced a concrete legal deadline and needed to turn its commitment to inclusion into an action plan. To comply with the EAA, they required an objective understanding of their website's current accessibility status, based on the internationally recognised Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

This initial audit served two critical purposes. It provided a detailed baseline of all existing accessibility issues, and served as the foundation for drafting the accessibility statement. Beyond a one-time fix, Toyota also wanted a way to monitor accessibility on an ongoing basis to address any new issues in future updates.

The solution: a two-pronged approach

To help Toyota, Humix implemented a two-pronged approach that combined deep manual analysis with the efficiency of automated testing.

First, Humix conducted an extensive manual accessibility audit. This is the most crucial step for EAA compliance. Their experts simulated the user experience of people with disabilities by using the same supporting tools they rely on, such as screen readers, magnifiers, and braille displays. This hands-on process identified specific issues, including insufficient colour contrast, missing alt texts on images, and links without descriptive text.

Second, this manual audit was complemented by an automated accessibility testing dashboard. Automated checks alone are not sufficient for EAA compliance, but they do provide an excellent baseline and make it easy to detect new errors after website changes. This gives Toyota a powerful tool for the continuous monitoring they requested.

Finally, Humix compiled all the findings into clear reports and used these to draft an accessibility statement in line with the EAA. In other words: they gave Toyota Belgium a complete package to move forward.

Thanks to your insights during the presentation and workshop, I now better understand how accessibility opens doors for everyone. Thank you so much for your collaboration. - Soumaya Amjoud, UX/UI & CRO Manager, Toyota Belgium

The result: a clear path to an inclusive website

Thanks to the accessibility experts at Humix, Toyota Belgium achieved a clear and actionable path towards full EAA compliance. The key results included:

  • An overview of all accessibility flaws, prioritised by impact, giving their development, design, and content teams a clear action plan.
  • An automated dashboard for ongoing monitoring, allowing them to maintain a high standard of accessibility with every new website release.
  • A detailed accessibility statement, ready for the European Accessibility Act deadline.
  • A transparent accessibility score, providing a clear benchmark to track progress and demonstrate their commitment to inclusion.
